A record that slays by its beauty, its simplicity, its melancholy. Each lyric hits you right through your heart and so does each note played by Rowland S. Howard.
A Place To Bury Strangers - s/t
A true shock and a record that left me speechless when I first heard it in my teens. It gathers what I like about shoegaze, about post-punk, mixed with extreme bias and wonderful songwriting.
Birds in Row - You, Me & The Violence
I stumbled upon this late but it broadened my musical horizons and made me feel like screaming in a microphone. It is once again a violent record but it is also fragile and intense.
The Cure - Pornography
As odd as it may sound, it is in my opinion one of the greatest psychedelic records ever. A monolith of darkness that makes it hard to escape and that one enjoys surrendering to almost masochistically.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.R.M.C
One of those life-changing records, first heard when I was 13 or something. This album is miraculously classic and elegant at the same time and there are more sides to it, a noisy one, a folky one and even a punk one.
Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Symphonic Suite Akira
The extended version of the incredible soundtrack to Akira manga. The requiem that ends it really blew my mind. It is very orchestral, halfway between western music and different types of asian sounds. The sound of apocalypse.
Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Total freedom and Syd Barrett’s genius. From bittersweet nursery rhymes to the epic and mystic ride Interstellar Overdrive. A record that makes you want to free yourself from all rules.
Sonic Youth - Goo
Sonic Youth, like early Pink Floyd, had a tremendous influence on my perception of music. This one may be their poppiest, I’ve listened to it a lot but I could have picked many other Sonic Youth records.
Bobby Beausoleil & The Freedom Orchestra - Lucifer Rising
Mystic, psychedelic, constantly oscillating between shadow and light, it is an absolutely magical soundtrack, both for the legends that surround it and for the purity of its music. A real journey.
The December Sound - The Silver Album
Probably one of my alltime favorite shoegaze records. I find it abrasive, bone-chilling, noisy, cocky and very melodic at the same time. There is no other shoegaze pegged album that sounds like this. I like every song and a rather astonishing production that runs counter to shoegaze dogma.
